Nutrition Labels are a required part of any packaged good. Medallion offers full nutrition panel testing along with the option to request a Mock Nutrition Label. Whether verifying a current product or developing something new, this is a great way to better understand your product.
Testing for a nutritional label
The tests below provide the baseline for creating a complete nutrition label.
Calories by Calculation Test
This test provides values for the Calories, carbohydrates, protein, and total fat line items on a nutrition label using the Atwater calculation method.
Carbohydrates by Calculation Test
Carbohydrates are calculated using Atwater Equation. Requires the following testing: Protein, Moisture, Fat, and Ash.
Ash Test
Samples are placed in hot furnace to measure overall inorganic content. Used in calculations for Carbohydrate and Calorie content.
Moisture Test
Used to calculate the Carbohydrate and Calorie content.
Cholesterol Test
This test measures the overall dietary cholesterol content in your food.
Fat by Gas Chromatography Test
This test measures the total fat, saturated fat, trans fat, mono- and poly- unsaturated fat. This test also includes the Fatty Acid profile.
Fiber (Insoluble, Soluble, Total - CODEX Definition) Test
This test provides the value for the Dietary Fiber line item on a nutrition label using the AOAC 2011.25 method. This test can also be used for Calorie adjustments based on latest FDA regulations.
Metals Screen I Test
This set of tests provides the values for the Calcium, Iron, Sodium, and Potassium line items on a nutrition label.
Sugar Profile by HPLC Test
This test provides the value for the Total Sugar line item on a nutrition label.
Protein (Dumas) Test
Analysis of the crude or total protein in your sample. This test can be used for general nutrition labeling for protein.
Vitamin D Test
This test provides the value for the Vitamin D line item on a nutrition label.
If you have sugar alcohols in your product
If you have naturally occurring and/or added sugar alcohols in your product and are making a claim about sugar alcohol, total and added sugar, then sugar alcohols need to be listed on your label.
Sugar Alcohol Screen Test (Gas Chromatograph)
This test provides the value for the sugar alcohol line item on a nutritional label.
Adding additional line items
Below are optional line items you may request to be added to your nutritional label. This can be requested in the Special Instructions of your submission form.
Vitamin A (Beta-Carotene) Test
This test provides the value for the Vitamin A line item on a nutrition label. There are two Vitamin A tests, Beta-Carotene (for plant-based food) and Retinol (for animal-based food).
Vitamin C Test
This test provides the value for the Vitamin C line item on a nutrition label.
Vitamin B9 - Folates DFE (Dietary Folate Equivalents) Test
This set of tests provides the values for various vitamers of Vitamin B9: Folic Acid, Total Folates, and also reports results in Folate DFE which is suitable for nutrition labeling.

Sample size requirements can vary by sample. Generally, 150-200g is needed for basic testing.
Your results will be listed on a lab report in % or per 100g of sample. You can add a Mock Nutrition Label to your order to get a preview of your nutrition label. The lab report and the mock label are not considered camera ready.
Most of this testing will take 7-9 business days. Current turn around times may vary.

Samples can be submitted in person or through a mail or shipping carrier. Make sure to fill out the appropriate order form with clear and descriptive information for the sample description, sample ID, and estimates if available. Please include any special handling instructions for preparing, draining, or compositing samples, and any specific information you would like us to know about your samples. We recommend that you submit samples that are representative of your lot. If your samples are perishable, we recommend sending them overnight, during the week, with dry ice or ice packs. We do not accept weekend deliveries. Medallion Labs is not responsible for any samples submitted that are compromised during the shipment.
We accept in-person sample drop-offs on business days between the hours of 9:00 AM-3:00 PM CST. If you are planning to drop off samples outside of these hours, please contact our Customer Service team at 1-800-245-5615 for availability.
