Common Color Analysis (Lovibond) Test Testing Questions

Lovibond is a color analysis specific to clear liquids. For the testing performed at Medallion Labs, this testing is specific to fats and oils that are clear liquids at room temperature (can’t be cloudy or partially solidified).

The sample is put into a small cuvette and placed into the instrument. The instrument measures the amount of red and yellow colors in the sample and compares against a series of calibrated standards to report the color values for that sample. The Red/Yellow Lovibond scale is particularly useful for measuring how refined an oil is, if the oil is in spec for appearance, or if the oil has aged.

The Lovibond Color test at Medallion Labs measures the amount of Red and Yellow Colors in a sample.

The instrument works by shining light through the sample, while also comparing against standard color filters. The sample is compared against the color standards until it matches.

In a more general sense, color and perception of color is a construct that can vary across individuals, experience, and preferences. For example, would two people pick out the same paint chip that is ‘sky blue’ in a paint store?
Because of this, the main benefit for any color measurement is that it takes a complex description and attempts to summarize in a few defined and objective values. This allows for precise quality control of your product in relation to color.

We make every effort to keep our methods and detection limits up to date according to the latest standards and qualifications. If you have any questions regarding the limit of detection/quantification or method references, please contact our Customer Service team at 1-800-245-5615.

Our standard turnaround time is 10 business days for most assays. There are some assays that require a longer turnaround time. We also offer a RUSH service that is half the time of the standard turnaround time of the assay at double the cost of the assay. A few assays that we provide cannot be rushed due to the nature of the test. Please check the specific assay you are interested in regarding the ability to RUSH the turnaround time.
