Method description

This method directly determines the amounts of fructose, galactose, glucose, sucrose, maltose, and lactose. The sugars are extracted and cleaned-up; thereafter, the appropriate dilution is quantitated using High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC).

Additional information

Sugar alcohols co-elute/interfere with simple sugars (fructose, galactose, glucose, sucrose, maltose, lactose). If your sample contains sugar alcohols and you need to determine total sugar, Sugar Alcohol Screen Test (Gas Chromatograph) will need to be requested in addition to this test. The simple sugar(s) experiencing interference will be reported using the Sugar Alcohol Screen Test. Total Sugars will not be listed on the Final Report for samples containing sugar alcohols. To calculate total sugar, the simple sugars (fructose, galactose, glucose, sucrose, maltose, and lactose) reported from this method and the Sugar Alcohol Screen Test will need to be added manually upon receipt of the Final Report.

Common Sugar Profile by HPLC Test Testing Questions

The sugar profile by HPLC (high-performance liquid chromatography) test is a chromatographic analysis that quantifies the amount of fructose, galactose, glucose, sucrose, maltose, and lactose in food products and raw ingredients.

Sugars are extracted from samples using solvent and then injected on an HPLC and analyzed against known standards.

We make every effort to keep our methods and detection limits up to date according to the latest standards and qualifications. If you have any questions regarding the limit of detection/quantification or method references, please contact our Customer Service team at 1-800-245-5615.

Our standard turnaround time is 10 business days for most assays. There are some assays that require a longer turnaround time. We also offer a RUSH service that is half the time of the standard turnaround time of the assay at double the cost of the assay. A few assays that we provide cannot be rushed due to the nature of the test. Please check the specific assay you are interested in regarding the ability to RUSH the turnaround time.

Our Sugar Profile by HPLC test will measure fructose, galactose, glucose, sucrose, maltose, and lactose, and Total Sugar is the sum of these sugars.

The lower LOQ/LOD values for this test are 0.1% for each sugar.

The Sugar by HPLC test is impacted by sugar alcohols (naturally occurring and added), stevia, and some types of fiber such as polydextrose and maltodextrin. These compounds cause interference by co-eluting at the same time as specific sugars, i.e., these compounds behave the same way as some types of sugar, and the instrument cannot fully separate sugar from interference. This interference is a challenge across the industry for this technology as food ingredients continue to evolve.

If your sample contains any of the above ingredients, we have a package called Total Sugar by Calculation that includes our Sugar Alcohol Screen to still report your Total Sugar and individual sugar content.
