The sample is extracted using saponification in basic solution, neutralized, diluted, and cleaned up. The extract is then separated using High-Performance Liquid Chromatography and the vitamin A content quantitated by UV-VIS detection.

This test is ISO/IEC 17025 accredited through A2LA, Certificate # 2769.01. This method determines the quantity of vitamin A in food products that include fortified (retinyl palmitate) and naturally-occurring forms of vitamin A (retinol and retinyl acetate). One mcg RAE is equivalent to 1 mcg retinol. Carotenes and retinol may be added together for the NLEA nutrition label declaration of vitamin A content.
